Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian, a Canadian/American media critic is also a public speaker. Feminist Frequency is a website with video and blogs on the representation of women in the media and in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a media critic, blogger as well as an award-winning feminist for nearly 10 years. Feminist Frequency is an educational non-profit website that explores the representations of females within popular culture's narratives. She is committed to deconstructing stereotypes of women and the way they are portrayed in popular culture. Furthermore, she works to raise awareness of internet-based harassment targeting women and marginalized groups of society. Holding a master's degree in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also popular as a public presenter and has presented speech at TEDxWomen's XOXO Festival and also the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Sarkeesian was fascinated by gender issues and feminism since a young age. When she was in 2009, she was still studying at the University of Toronto, Sarkeesian created the website Feminist Frequency. Someone who was ambitious planned to create a web-series focused on how gender is represented in gaming. However, she found herself at the center of a harassment online campaign. But the assault did be a deterrent, but it only bolstered her determination as a feminist critic of media. To honor the numerous accomplishments she's made to women's rights, she's been the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational nonprofit that explores the representations of women in pop-culture and the narratives that surround them.
